excellent car camping/base camp tent

"Best tent I have stayed in, yrs ago I stopped tent camping and bought a 40ft diesel pusher for comfort etc. Came back to camping with my young daughters 6-8 needed something to withstand wind and rain of the early 3 seasons.
Easy one person set up faster with 2 but very manageable with one. Vesibule on the front what a great feature for the porapotty for my young girls late night even the dad lol :).

Rained first day for 4 hrs and again 2 days later from 5pm to 2 am completly dry and fairly good gusts of wind didnt even flutter this thing with the guy lines out.
Awesome love it.
Several other tents failed the all night rain and several others appeared real soggy, not ours looked great and performed as well.

Did I mention I love this tent for car camping :)lol."

Excellent Tent, Huge, worth it!!!

"Advantages:
Solid construction, excellent value. The tent is Huge. You can practically park a car in the footprint. Easily fits eight adults as well as gear. Great for Family Camping. Has three partitions if desire. Free Standing, and fairly easy to set up. Best to set up and take down with two people.

Disadvantages:
Weighs 30+ pounds and has large duffle bag for carrying. Bulky, not as good for long backpacking treks. Would rather carry 2 smaller, more compact tents than haul this tent in the woods. Also once in woods, where would you find a footprint large enough to park the tent.

Would definitely recommend for anyone who wants the best, and largest family tent on the market. A best buy!"

Great for what it's designed to do.

"All thru the years I have made fun of the people with the monster tents and have envangelized on the merits of small, lightweight tents. However, life has a way of teaching me lessons the hard way and I must now learn to enjoy the flavor of fricasseed crow. After years of our family of 4 out-growing each of our 2- and 3-person tents and then catching too many elbows from the now teenage kids in our "huge" 4-person tent during backpacking trips, we finally found our mountain sanctuary and purchased our own lot with a spectacular view of the Sangre de Cristos. Since we are 2 college educations away from building our dream cabin, we were in search of the next best accomodations and came upon the TNF Trailhead 8. Last weekend was the virgin outing for our mega-tent and I was thoroughly impressed. Please note that the Trlhd 8 will never replace the Roadrunner 2 for summer backpacking with the wife or one of the kids. It will never replace the Expedition 25 for winter trips and it will never replace the old Foundation 4 for family backpacking trips. However, for setting up a basecamp and substituting for a cabin, it does remarkably well. It is easy to set up, has a full coverage rainfly (which I believe is a requirement for any double-walled tent), has a huge vestible for shoes and dog crates, is plenty tall to stand in, and, best of all, has 2 separate wings so the parents don't have to be right next to the squabbling teenagers! We put a queen-sized air mattress in each wing with plenty of room to spare and still had acres of space in the middle of the tent. We found ourselves missing the cozy feeling of our other tents, but greatly enjoying the total lack of the usual battling for space.

Now for the downsides to this tent. It is not an expedition quality basecamp tent. We had 2 days of high wind with some gusts over 40 mph. Although we pitched the tent behind a good stand of 6' scrub oak, the tent was still battered by the wind. It is so tall, massive, vertical, limber and loose, that it makes a much better sail than a sleek, wind-shedding high altitude bombshelter (think VE-25). The ventilation is acceptable, but not spectacular as the massive tent catches a lot of sun and warms up quickly whenever it catches direct rays and the full coverage fly has some vents, but it's still a full coverage fly. I had read reviews on the 1st generation of this tent complaining about the fabric ripping near the pole ends, but after the beating this tent took for 2 days, it seems that TNF has addressed that problem.

In summary, I believe TNF has designed a great tent for those looking for a cheap alternative to a small mountain cabin. As long as you are not looking for an expedition quality basecamp tent or a tent to use in windy conditions without adequate natural wind-breaks, this is a well thought-out design that is easy to pitch and appears to be reasonably durable for weekend 3-season campers that need to house an army or at least get some good distance from their teenagers that have refined the art of arguing .about everything and nothing."

First-rate tent

"The cons of this tent are the weight and packed size. It is meant for car-camping or having to hike it a short distance as a base camp. This is the flip-side of a huge, well-constructed tent. Secondly, it would be nice if there was more mesh with zipper-close windows for privacy. The end of the "rooms" would be a good place. In the Texas heat, it is nice to get as much air flow as possible.

My girlfriend and I have used it in a variety of weather conditions. The tent has performed flawlessly including high-winds, 25+ mph, and heavy rains. With the guy-lines, it easily withstood the winds. In heavy rains, it kept everything dry and the vestibule was great for cover to dry off before getting into the tent.

It is spacious with plenty of usable area. A family of four could have inflatable air mattresses and personal belongings in it without feeling cramped as far as camping goes. The construction is superb and set-up is easy. It is a little confusing initially to identify where the vestibule pole on the rain-fly is to connect. I had to study the picture on the web site after my first failed field attempt when attaching the rain-fly. Despite this, I am very happy with the tent and strongly recommend it."
